Mount Katsuyama is a hill in central Matsuyama, Ehime, crowned by Matsuyama Castle. Kato Yoshiaki, one of the Seven Spears of Shizugatake, began this hilltop castle. Its main enclosure occupies the summit, the second bailey the southwest slope, and the third the western foot. The keep is one of Japan’s twelve surviving originals. The area centred on these three enclosures is a national historic site, and 21 buildings are Important Cultural Properties. The castle is also called Katsuyama-jo or Kinki-jo.
