Mount Arato

A 762-meter conical peak in western Tetta district of Niimi City, Okayama Prefecture, nicknamed Atetsu-Fuji for its symmetry that recalls Mount Fuji. The mountain is the eroded remnant of a volcano that erupted more than two million years ago, with columnar basalt exposed near the summit. Arato Shrine, whose Muromachi-period main hall is a prefectural cultural property, sits at the southern foot, approached through an avenue of cedars over 150 years old. An observation tower called the Tower of Happiness stands at 777 meters and offers a 360-degree panorama. The peak is included in both the 100 Famous Mountains of the Chugoku Region and the 100 Famous Mountains of Okayama Prefecture.
