From Omata, a village in Murakami, Niigata, that keeps the look of a post town on the old Dewa Kaido, the walk climbs via Janigetoge pass to 555 m Nihonkoku on the watershed along the border with Tsuruoka, Yamagata. Several stories explain the unusual name, one tied to a hawk presented to a shogun, and after the view from the summit pavilion the loop drops from the pass to the Zaodo trailhead and back to the village.
