From the trailhead where Nijuichi-no-sawa meets the Otofuke River, deep up a forest road from Tokachi-Mitsumata, the route crosses the stream once and takes a ridge counted among Hokkaido's three steepest ascents. Above about 1,300 m it steepens past roped slabs and dwarf pine to the ridge junction and on to 1,967 m Mount Ishikari, source of the Ishikari River. The Ishikari range is folded, not volcanic, and the ridge looks out to sharp Nipesotsu and the Daisetsu peaks.
