Sakurajima is a 1,117 m active stratovolcano rising from Kinkō Bay in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, made up of the highest summit Ontake (Kita-dake), Naka-dake and Minami-dake. The mountain sits within Kirishima-Kinkōwan National Park. The 1914 Taishō eruption joined the former island to the Ōsumi Peninsula, and Sakurajima remains active with a standing Volcanic Alert Level of 3 (entry restricted). The 2 km radius around the vents is a Disaster Countermeasures Basic Act exclusion zone, and the summits cannot legally be climbed; the highest point accessible to visitors is the Yunohira Observatory at 373 m on the fourth station of Kita-dake, which gives a sweeping view of the volcano and Kagoshima City across the bay. Frequent ferry service from central Kagoshima makes it a major sightseeing destination.
