The highest peak on Amami-Ōshima at 694 meters, sitting on the boundary between Uken and Yamato villages in Ōshima District, Kagoshima Prefecture. Revered as a sacred mountain where the twin deities said to have founded Amami descended from the heavens, its summit zone is a sanctuary for rare endemic plants and animals and is designated as a National Natural Monument and as a Special Protection Zone of Amami Guntō National Park. The standard trail climbs from the Yuwandake Observatory in roughly an hour; the observatory view — one of the Amami Ten Vistas — sweeps across Yakeuchi Bay to the Ōshima Strait, Kakeroma Island and as far as Tokunoshima.
