Mt. Shiragadake

白髪岳

Shiragadake is a 1,416.7-meter peak near the border of Asagiri Town in Kumamoto Prefecture and Miyazaki Prefecture, rising in the southern Kyushu Mountains. Its name, meaning "White-Hair Peak," comes from the silver rime ice that coats its summit in winter, said to resemble an old person's white hair. The mountain hosts a beech-dominated old-growth forest near the southern range limit of the species, designated as a national Nature Conservation Area in 1980. It is listed in the Hundred Famous Mountains of Kyushu, the 1000 Mountains of Japan, the Hundred Mountains of Kumamoto, the Kumamoto prefectural climbing guide, and the 1003 Peaks of Japan.
