Mt. Shibisan

Mt. Shibisan is a 1,066.8 m peak on the border between Satsuma Town and Izumi City in Kagoshima Prefecture, the principal summit of the Izumi (Shibi) Range and the highest peak of the northern Satsuma region. Long revered as the 'Mt. Kōya of the western provinces', it served as a centre of mountain ascetic practice, together with Shibi-jinja Shrine and Shibi Hot Spring at its foot. The natural beech-and-akagashi forest at its summit is designated a Forest Genetic Resource Conservation Forest. The summit is accessible by paved road, and on clear days the view extends to Sakurajima, Kirishima, the Amakusa Islands and Mt. Unzen. The mountain is one of the Kyushu Hyakumeizan.
