Mt. Sasayama (1,065 m) rises on the border between Ainan Town in Ehime and Sukumo City in Kōchi, within Ashizuri-Uwakai National Park. Long revered as a sacred peak of mountain worship, its summit is crowned by Sasayama Shrine, said to date from the Asuka period, and the mountain is famed for sweeping displays of Akebono azalea and rhododendron in late April and early May. Counted among Japan's 300 Famous Mountains and the 100 Famous Mountains of Shikoku, the summit commands views of the Uwa Sea, Okinoshima, and—on clear days—the mountains of Kyūshū.
