Mt. Kanmuri is a 516.3-meter peak in the Kanmuridake area of Ichiki-Kushikino City, Kagoshima Prefecture, comprising three east-west summits — Nishi-dake (516 m), Naka-dake (496 m) and Higashi-dake (486 m). Legend traces its name to Xu Fu, the emissary of Qin Shi Huang sent in search of an immortality elixir, who is said to have offered his crown at the summit. Once dotted with temples as the cradle of ancient mountain Buddhism in southern Kyushu, the foot of the mountain hosts Kanmuri-dake Shrine and the Kanmuri-dake Chinese-style garden. The peak is listed among the Kyushu 100 Famous Mountains.
