Mt. Apoidake

Mt. Apoidake is an 810.2-meter peak in Samani Town, Samani District, Hokkaido, at the southern end of the Hidaka Range. It is composed of globally rare mantle peridotite, and the unusual soil chemistry supports many alpine and endemic plant species despite the modest elevation — its "Mt. Apoi alpine plant community" is designated a Special National Natural Monument. Apoi was recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2015 and now lies within Hidaka-Sanmyaku-Erimo-Tokachi National Park, which became Japan's largest and 35th national park in June 2024. A well-maintained trail leads about three hours from the Apoi Geopark Visitor Center at the base to the summit; the mountain appears in the Hana no Hyakumeizan and Hokkaido Hyakumeizan lists.
