Mount Myōhō

Mount Myōhō is a 749.5-metre peak in Nachi-Katsuura Town, Higashi-Muro District, Wakayama Prefecture, set at the southern tip of the Kii Peninsula and counted—together with Eboshi-dake and Hikari-ga-mine—among the Three Peaks of Nachi. The summit is occupied by Kumano Myōhōsan Amidaji, a Shingon-school temple founded according to tradition in 815 by Kūkai with Amida Nyorai as its principal image, long revered as the goal of the "deceased's pilgrimage to Kumano" and known also as the Nyonin-Kōya (Kōya for women). The whole mountain lies within Yoshino-Kumano National Park and is listed in the Nihon Hyaku-Reihō and the 34 Mountains of Spiritual Merit selections.
