Mount Kuno (216 m) rises above Suruga Bay in Suruga Ward, Shizuoka City, with the National Treasure Kunozan Toshogu Shrine — dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu — at its summit. Following Ieyasu's deathbed wishes in 1616, his remains were interred here; the shrine, predating Nikko Toshogu, became the prototype of the gongen-zukuri Toshogu style. The southern stone stairway has 1,159 steps, while the Nihondaira Ropeway provides access from the north.
