Mount Io is a 703.7-meter active volcano on Satsuma-Iojima, at the northern rim of Kikai Caldera in Mishima Village, Kagoshima Prefecture. The isolated peak continuously emits sulfur and has long been known as a sulfur source, mentioned in the Tale of the Heike. Mining near the summit took place from 1868 to 1964. The climbing route has collapsed, and entry is restricted to academic research and disaster education. Educational visits require an island guide and are limited to the Monogusa fumaroles.
