Mount Hachirō

八郎岳

Mount Hachirō (589.82 m) rises in the Hirayama-machi district of Nagasaki City and is the highest summit of both Nagasaki City and the Nagasaki Peninsula, forming the central spine of the peninsula ridge. The name is traditionally attributed to the Heian-period warrior Minamoto-no-Tametomo, known as Chinzei Hachirō. Its grassy crown affords panoramic views of Nagasaki Harbour, the Gotō Sea, and distant Battleship Island, and the slopes preserve mature forest that supports a sizable wild-deer population. It is listed among the Kyūshū Hyakumeizan and Japan's Hundred Low Mountains (2017).
