Daigyōji-yama is a 957.4 m peak straddling Misato Town in Shimomashiki District and Yatsushiro City in Kumamoto Prefecture. Halfway up its slopes stands Shaka-in (Kinkaizan Daion-kyō-ji), a temple founded over 1,200 years ago. From the 240 m foot to the temple at 860 m climbs the Shaka-in Misaka Walkway, Japan's longest stone stairway with 3,333 steps over 1.9 km — built in 1980–1988 of stones from Japan, China, Korea, India, the United States, Brazil, South Africa and elsewhere. The annual "Attack the Number-One" stair-climb event is held each November.
