On the border of Kanegasaki and Kitakami in Iwate, at the northern end of the Yakeishi range, this return climbs from the Ugai Shimizu trailhead through old-growth beech past the lower and upper Sai-no-kawara to the 1,130 m summit of Mount Komagatake, where the inner sanctuary of Komagata Shrine stands. Long revered, it has shirane-aoi and dogtooth violets in spring and a full circle of views to Mount Iwate, the Yakeishi range and Hayachine.
