From the Mihara summit entrance on Izu Oshima, this route follows the summit promenade to Mihara Shrine, which the 1986 lava is said to have spared, circles the rim of the roughly 300 m crater over Mihara-shinzan and Kengamine, and descends through the fresh 1986 lava flow to Oshima Onsen Hotel. It brings the crater and lava landforms of the island's highest peak, an active volcano, close at hand and shows vegetation returning from bare rock to grassland and forest.
