Mt. Yoshinogatake

A 547-meter peak in Yoshino district of Matsuoka, Eiheiji Town in Yoshida District, Fukui Prefecture, also known as Mount Zaō. Together with Mounts Hakusan, Hino, Ochi and Monju it forms the "Echizen Five Mountains" said to have been opened by the eighth-century priest Taichō. The Zaō shrine just below the summit enshrines Zaō Gongen and an Eleven-Faced Kannon, with its inner sanctuary opened to the public only on April 18 each year — long honoured as a sacred Shugendō site and a remote-worship point for Mount Hakusan, the Sea of Japan and the Fukui Plain. The local community maintains the trails, steps and summit observatory, and the peak is featured in the Bunken Tozan guide of Fukui mountains.
